Calling all pedal pushers – bike to work day is June 25

By Kathy Fallert

It’s that time again … inflate those tires, don the old helmet, and join more than 25,000 Coloradans on the annual Bike to Work Day. Much of the country celebrates Bike to Work Day in May, but due to Colorado’s mountain communities and unpredictable weather, we celebrate Colorado Bike Month in June, with the fourth Wednesday of the month being Bike to Work Day.

The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) brings together governments and other interested groups in the metro area each year to organize Bike to Work Day as a way of raising awareness of bicycle commuting. This year’s Bike to Work Day will be Wednesday, June 25, and registration is now open.

Registration allows participants the possibility of winning great prizes. Also, since this is a federally-funded event, registrations enables DRCOG to correctly report the impact of taking 25,000 or more vehicles off the road for a day, which helps ensure future funding. Join in and register today!

Why bike to work you ask? Staying fit, reducing your carbon footprint, avoiding traffic delays, and starting your day energized are just a few of the many reasons why biking to work is a great idea. Stations will be set up offering free breakfast and beverages to the bikers along their commute. The Denver metro area has hundreds of miles of paved trails available for a comfortable, bike-friendly ride. Visit www.mywaytogo.org for help mapping your trip.
