Susan Elizabeth Lee, Brad Smith and Phillis Shimamoto delivered socks to the Denver Rescue Mission last winter.  The “Sock-it-to-’em” campaign hopes to deliver more than 10,000 pairs of socks to the homeless this year.

The fact that the number one need of the homeless in Denver is socks may soon change, thanks to Susan Elizabeth Lee. A Castle Pines resident for more than ten years, Lee and her friend Phillis Shimamoto delivered more than 10,000 pairs of socks to the homeless shelters along the I-25 corridor from Fort Collins to Castle Rock last year through their ‘“Sock-it-to-’em” sock campaign.

The sock campaign is in its third year, and Lee hopes to exceed 10,000 pairs of socks this year. Lee said, “When we started doing this we had no idea what a pair of socks really meant, until the shelters began telling us that they can’t keep up with the demand of socks and that each pair of socks makes a significant difference to the homeless person who receives them!”

The campaign needs socks for all ages and sizes, male and female. The Metro Denver Homeless Initiative found that of the 11,167 people who were homeless in January, 2013, 62 percent were in households with children.

The drive runs from Thanksgiving through the end of December. Drop off new and/or gently used clean socks at MIYO Cafe at 858 W. Happy Canyon Road or Leading Edge Physical Therapy at 7280 Lagae Road, Unit F (Castle Pines Parkway & Lagae).

Rocky Heights Middle School’s Rotary Club is planning to participate this year by collecting socks, and American Academy students have generously contributed during the last two years, providing more than 2,000 pairs of children’s socks. “It’s a significant and simple way children can help other children and feel like they really are making a difference.” said Shimamoto.
