TTE students take a shot at good reads

… Fire! Students at Timber Trail Elementary catapult spare change across the
library to have fun and raise money to benefit both the school’s library
and libraries of kids in need through the “All for Books” charity.

Timber Trail Elementary (TTE) students journeyed back to Medieval times last month during the school’s semi-annual book fair. The fair, which raises money to purchase new books and materials for the school library had a noble theme, “Sir Readalot’s Castle,” as well as a noble cause. In addition to raising funds for the school, students also helped to purchase books for needy kids.
Every year at book fair time, TTE’s library teacher Dawn Smith comes up with a novel way to collect spare change from students. This year, Smith enlisted the help of her husband Roger to build coin catapults. Students brought coins from home and then catapulted them across a designated area of the library toward a cardboard castle to get a chance to win prizes. The spare change was then collected and donated to a group called “All for Books.”
“All for Books is a really great program,” said Smith. “We use the spare change money to buy books for our school, and then Scholastic matches 100 percent of what we collect to fund book purchases for needy kids.”
The fair, of course, wasn’t all about coin launching. It also gave students a chance to stock up on some great reads for fall.
“I love the book fair, and I think it’s beneficial even if a student doesn’t buy a single thing,” said Smith. “I love that the kids get together and have great conversations about books.”
