DCSO Cracks Down on Out-of-State Vehicle Registration Tags

by Terri Wiebold

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and the Douglas County Recorder’s Office have partnered up to address possible license plate fraud issues. Colorado statute requires that a resident register a vehicle within 30 days of residency in Colorado, even if the vehicle plates are from another state and are not expired.

“There has been some concern over out-of-state or even out-of-county license plates and citizens who seem to have temporary plates for extended periods of time,” said Jack Arrowsmith, Douglas County Clerk and Recorder.

According to Arrowsmith, there may be very legitimate reasons for extending temporary plates, but the County had no plan in place to investigate cases of abuse or fraud. “This new plan will hopefully address citizen concerns and educate those who may not realize they are violating the law,” he said.

Castle Pines North residents who believe someone is violating the state statute and wish to report it should go to www.douglas.co.us/clerk and refer to the motor vehicle page. At the bottom of the page there is a link to the form “Vehicles not registered per Colorado statute.” Residents can complete the form and return it to the Clerk and Recorders Office.

“This is a good example of multiple County departments working together to come up with a solution for a simple violation,” said Sheriff David Weaver. “It also creates better communication between these departments and the community.”
