WHAT: County Sheriffs of Colorado Scholarship Program

NARRATIVE: DOUGLAS COUNTY: Sheriff David A Weaver announced today that County Sheriffs of Colorado, Inc. (CSOC), the state Sheriff’s Association, will award a $500.00 scholarship to a deserving Douglas County student next spring. CSOC established the scholarship program in 1978. Since then, this effort has continued as a meaningful expression of the Sheriffs’ confidence in and respect for education and training. CSOC considers this an investment in the future and believes that our membership is helping to provide deserving students with an opportunity to make a positive contribution to society.

In addition to the $500 scholarships, on recipient will be selected from among the county winners to receive an additional $1,000 Eugene and Becky Battles Scholarship. Mr. Eugene D. Battles, who was from Denver, Colorado, made a decision in 1994 to support the Office of Sheriff and County Sheriffs of Colorado by donating his estate for the benefit of future endeavors decided upon by the CSOC/Battles Trust Board. Eugene Battles was a charter member of CSOC and a 27-year member of the National Sheriff’s Association.

According to the Sheriff, announcements and application packages have been mailed to school district offices in the county and all Colorado higher education institutions. Applications are also available on line at www.csoc.org or at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, which is located at 4000 Justice Way, Castle Rock, CO, 80109.

Sheriff Weaver explained that this is the 30th year that County Sheriffs of Colorado has made such scholarships available. One scholarship will be awarded in more than thirty Colorado counties this year. Applications will be reviewed by a local citizens’ committee appointed by Sheriff Weaver, and a selection will be made on the basis of criteria established by CSOC. This criteria includes ability, merit, character, sincerity and career purpose.

Any legal permanent resident of Douglas County enrolled in, or applying to, a vocational training program or institution of higher learning in the State of Colorado as a full or part-time student is eligible to apply. There are no restrictions as to the course of study or training which may be pursued, and no restrictions are placed upon applications by reason or race, creed, age, sex or national origin.
