In early January, a group of neighbors and friends from Castle Pines North (CPN) volunteered a day and went to help build a house in Commerce City for Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver.

There are many groups that volunteer to help those less fortunate have a decent place to live. All it takes is a group of three to ten committed hard workers.

CPN resident Susan Sanders was inspired to help after watching her husband, Chad Sanders, a District Manager for Lowes Home Improvement Stores, partner with Habitat on many home buildings. Seeing the good that is done, Sanders rounded up a group of neighbors and friends to go and work on a house for a single mother and her two children.

“My major motivation was giving back. I am fortunate to have the things in life that I have always dreamed of, but knowing there are those less fortunate, makes me to want to play a part in helping someone achieve their dreams,” said Sanders.

Sander’s group spent the day hanging insulation, cutting trim, caulking, sanding and painting. In addition to the many hours of volunteer help, the homeowner is required to put in between 250 to 500 hours of her own elbow grease before she can get the house, which she fits in around raising her children and working two jobs. In the end though, this single mom will have a brand new house and a space to call home for her family.

Rounding up her team of workers, Sanders discovered that there are many people out there interested in helping with Habitat, but simply don’t know how to get plugged in with the organization.

“With a little networking, I found out that anyone could volunteer and they just needed to sign up,” said Sanders.
