Recycle program ends at Fire Station 36

Submitted by Andy Lyon, South Metro Fires Rescue Authority

Because of numerous on-going problems with the recycle dumpsters at neighborhood fire stations, the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority has ended the recycling program at Station 36 in Castle Pines North and also at Station 33 in Centennial.

“We would like to be supportive of our citizens desire to recycle,” stated Randy Whipple, the fire authority’s facilities manager. “However, we were having too many issues with the dumpsters being over used and used improperly.”

According to Whipple, those issues included: people continuing to leave material around the dumpsters when the dumpsters were clearly full and overflowing – despite signage requesting that they not do so; people using the recyclable dumpster as household trash dumpsters; and an inability to get the dumpsters emptied in a timely fashion when they became full.

“We requested more frequent pick-ups of the dumpsters but were not successful in getting that,” says Whipple. As a result, windblown trash was spreading across the station property and into the nearby neighborhoods.

South Metro hopes people continue to recycle but, given the chronic nature of the problems at stations 33 and 36, the fire authority has made the decision not to use those stations as a collection points.
