RHMS named Intel Schools of Distinction finalist

by Tracy Dudley

The Intel Foundation recently named Rocky Heights Middle School a finalist for the Intel Schools of Distinction Award in the Math Excellence category. The annual program honors schools across the United States for implementing innovative programs that inspire students to excel in math and science.

Rocky Heights was recognized specifically for its outstanding student-centered math program that fosters the opportunity to solve worthwhile mathematical tasks that apply to real-life situations. All finalist schools must offer rigorous, challenging, and engaging programs that teach students how to apply mathematics skills to solve real problems, approach projects as teams, and communicate succinctly on the subject.

“It’s an honor to get this recognition. I applaud our highly qualified, hard-working math teachers who continue to promote critical thinking, problem solving within a group, and real-world mathematical application.

During these difficult economic times, it’s imperative that businesses support education with the end goal of producing a talented 21st century workforce. Thank you to the Intel Corporation for their support of outstanding educational programs,” said Patricia Dierberger, Principal of Rocky Heights Middle School.

As one of eighteen finalists, Rocky Heights will receive a $2,500 grant from the Intel Foundation. The school plans to invest the money in SMART tools training and additional math manipulatives.
