Buffalo Ridge Book Fair – a huge success

The book fair’s grand opening happened in conjunction with the Rock Slide and the Waffle Brother’s Waffle Breakfast. While runners stretched and prepared for the race start Clifford the Big Red Dog gave hugs while Lea M. carried a sign announcing that the book fair was open for business.

Once again the Fall Scholastic Book Fair proved to be a success at Buffalo Ridge Elementary (BRE) School. With more than $6,000 raised in cash and scholastic dollars, the school was able to install five new SMART Boards as well as purchase new books for the school through Scholastic.

The book fair honored everyday heroes and Linda Day, book fair chair, held an essay contest in each classroom asking students to write about a hero in his or her life. The winning essay from each class was on display in the hallway into the gym and the essay author was awarded a $5 gift certificate to spend at the fair.

New at this fall’s book fair was a program that Scholastic has been running for several years called “One for Books”. The Dream Team, the BRE student council, ran the program. Each classroom collected loose change that was donated to the book fair.

More than $920 was collected over the course of the week. This allowed more books to be purchased from the fair. In addition Scholastic matched the dollar amount and will donate up to one million books to three national non-profit organizations – Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc., the Kids in Need Foundation, and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

As the fair came to a close, students, teachers and staff settled in to read new books and anticipate the upcoming spring book fair
