Calling all Parents to ‘WalkAbout’ RHMS

Article by Kathy Dunker

Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) is introducing a new program which will be open to all parents and guardians for the upcoming school year.

The “WalkAbout Program,” inspired by the success of the Watch DOGS program, is a school supported, parent staffed group that provides a positive adult presence on campus during high traffic times; before school, after school and lunch. Teams of parents will essentially “walk about” the school and aid with student monitoring.

The additional adult presence on campus is designed to promote citizenship and discourage inappropriate behavior. It also gives parents the opportunity to volunteer in an area that directly impacts their child’s safety and gives them an additional connection to a big part of their child’s day.

The WalkAbout volunteers will work closely with the staff and administrators to help keep the middle school campus feeling safe and secure for everyone.

Unlike the Watch DOGS program, WalkAbout will allow greater flexibility with parents’ schedules. Parents may sign up for times that work for them, and may come as often as they would like. All parents are welcome to participate after completing a one-time training session to be offered in the fall.

If you are an RHMS parent and would like to be part of WalkAbout, plan to attend a training session. The sessions will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24, and Wednesday, September 1. RHMS is looking forward to this additional involvement from the parent community!
