Fire near Castle Rock

Submitted by Andy Lyon South Metro Fire Rescue

Approximately 60 personnel from seven Douglas County fire agencies worked to contain a brush fire near Castle Rock this afternoon. The fire burned 13 acres of brush and some trees after it broke out around 12:36 this afternoon. No structures were damaged though two homes were evacuated for a brief time as a precaution. There were no injuries.

Investigators think the fire may have been started by a passing train. There were actually two fires which started right next to the tracks and grew together. Crews are still on scene mopping up at this hour (5:24 p.m.).

The fire was in the West Douglas County Fire Protection District about a mile southwest of the intersection of Highway 85 and Happy Canyon Road. Units from West Douglas, Castle Rock, South Metro, Littleton, Jackson 105, Franktown and Larkspur responded. They were assisted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Castle Rock Police and the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management.
