RHMS Science Olympiads score at Colorado School of Mines

By Kathy Dunker

The Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) Science Olympiad teams rocked the state tournament at the Colorado School of Mines last April. Out of the original 65 middle school teams who entered Science Olympiad, the two RHMS team finished 13th place and 28th place overall which is rare for first year teams to accomplish.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division. RHMS students had some of the best performances in the state. Paul Brunts, Jonathan Beirne, Dane Burkholder, and Ben King placed first in the “Pentathlon” which is comprised of difficult academic and physical challenges in the five major Olympiad content areas.

In addition, third place victories were celebrated by Kati Glover and Nathan Pucheril for their “Physical Science Lab” and also by Jaydon Weiss and Jordan
Potarf for their work on “Can’t Judge A Powder.”

RHMS teacher sponsors Chad Glidden and Brian Hall are very proud of the students who participated and look forward to an even better year next year!

Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. Learn more about it at www.soinc.org.
