Sports positively influence female athletes

By Tracy Dudley

According to David Callan, Douglas County School District’s director of athletics, it is important for women to participate in sports.

“Women involved in sports are 41 percent more likely to graduate from college in five years, have higher grade-point averages, and are more responsible and productive citizens,” said Callan. “Participation in sports is the predicate of future success in life.”

On January 22, the Douglas County Educational Foundation hosted its Fifth Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day luncheon celebrating women in sports. The event spotlighted more than 130 female student athletes from nine Douglas County middle and high schools.

Local Rock Canyon High School honored five outstanding athletes who also perform exceptionally in academics: Jody Hunt for cross country and track; Meghan Long for swimming and soccer; Steffani Meusburger for gymnastics and track; Whitney Prior for cheer and track; and Jessica Salus for softball.
