A new year; a new mindset

Column by Chris Bonham, intern writer

January is seen by many people to be a month of change. Who hasn’t made at least one New Year’s resolution in their life? Many folks vow to lose X number of pounds by the time the next year rolls around. Or, they determine to spend more time with family.

But most of us know the very next step in the process: we forget. We forget what we promised ourselves we would do. Sometimes it’s because we simply lose interest in whatever it is we wanted to accomplish. Or sometimes it’s because we set our sights too high and figure that, since it was unreasonable anyway, we are not bound by it.

In these tough times, I have a humble suggestion for a simple resolution you can adopt this year: hope. This word has been very overused in recent years, so an elaboration is in order.

Hope does not just mean wishful thinking. In fact, that’s not hope at all. Wishful thinking is dreaming, plain and simple. The hope I’m talking about has multiple facets. Hope means trusting others. Hope means encouraging and loving those that you care about, even when you don’t want to.

For students, it can mean respecting those older than you or treating your peers with an extra dose of kindness. Here’s another thing about hope: it’s not a one man job. It’s infectious.

This coming year, I challenge you to create hope in your life. I challenge you to not let your circumstances or situations dictate your outlook and how you treat others. Most importantly, I challenge you to love better, live louder, and to be the change you want to see.
