American Academy students show savvy at science

American Academy (AA) seventh and eighth grade students took top honors at The Denver Metro Regional Science Fair, which was held in February at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The award night was held in the IMAX Theater with more than 500 students competing for recognition.

The following science fair category award winners will continue to the state and/or national science fair competitions to be held later this year: Kelcey Beckman, first place, health and medicine; Tanner Glenn, second place, environmental science; Natalie Hunt, tied for second place, physical science with Kristina Stilson; and Mitch Whitten, third place, plant sciences.

The following American Academy students took special awards of excellence at the regional science fair: Mimi Kim, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society; Emily Butler, sponsored by the Association of Women Geoscientists Award; Josh Walker, sponsored by the American Dental Association Award; Tanner Glenn, sponsored by Cherry Creek Stewardship Partners Award; Justin Koeiman, sponsored by Ricoh Corporation Award; and Savanna Allred, sponsored by the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine.

Amanda Lane-Cline, senior academic director, and Nikki Smith and Warren Astler, both science teachers at American Academy, received awards for outstanding achievement in environmental and earth sciences. The awards were sponsored by Cherry Creek Basin Water Quality Authority and Arapahoe County Open Space.
