Russell Maranto, with Troop 316 from Castle Pines and a senior at Rock Canyon High School, was the proud recipient of the Congressional Award earlier this month. Maranto, resident of Hidden Pointe, earned his Eagle Scout in 2007, and has even gone beyond that to achieve the Triple Silver Palm level with Scouts.

The Congressional Award is a public private partnership created by Congress in 1979 to promote and recognize achievement, initiative and service in America’s youth ages 14 to 23.  It provides a unique opportunity for young people to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character and foster community service, personal development and citizenship.

The Congressional Award has four goal setting areas, which include voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and learning expeditions. Maranto fulfilled the public service requirement through volunteer service on the Douglas County Youth Congress, the Town of Castle Rock Teen Court, and providing volunteer support of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society convention held in Denver in 2008.

Maranto’s personal development goal focused on improving his leadership skills to be a more effective boy scout youth leader. The physical fitness objective centered on Maranto’s middle school track efforts and completing a 90 mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch of Comarron in 2009.  And lastly, Maranto’s learning expedition involved planning and receiving a learning experience at the Crow Canyon archeological site in southwest Colorado.

Maranto, with a total of 122 merit badges, was employed this summer at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch. After high school graduation in the spring, Maranto plans to attend the University of Wyoming to major in Criminal Justice and minor in Business Management.

Maranto, remarked about his prestigious award, “Receiving this award has not only added to my becoming a better individual, but also to becoming a more successful contributor to society.”
