Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) Drama Club performed its spring musical comedy last month, “Thoroughly Modern Millie Junior.” Led by director Maclain Looper and musical director Susie Ritter the production was quite impressive and showcased a lot of young talent at the middle school.

With a cast of 80 actors and nearly 20 stage hands, the Millie production was a big endeavor. The singing of all performers was wonderful, and the comic timing came off exceptionally well. The main roll of Millie, played by eighth grader Logan Schurr, was a performance just shy of Broadway. Even the stage changes were handled smoothly and with ease.

This was Looper’s first time directing Millie. Looper said about seeing “Thoroughly Modern Millie” ten years ago at the Marquis Theatre, “As the first number began, I found that I had fallen in love with this show. Little did I know I would eventually direct it with 80 teenagers!” The musical is based on the 1967 film starring Julie Andrews. It won six Tony Awards in 2002, including Best Musical.

Auditions for Millie took place in February, followed by three months of after school rehearsals. The cast and crew showed how much their dedication paid off with exceptional results. Ritter remarked, “The number of singers and the singing talent at this school is unbelievable.  We have kids that have no fear and let out their amazing voices.  I am blessed to work with such talent!”

Looper went on to say, “I told these kids that I would not accept anything less than their very best. They have not disappointed! I feel really blessed to be a part of this school. The administration, my fellow teachers, my awesome partner in crime, Susie Ritter, and the talented kids I get to work with on a daily basis all make it possible to put on great shows like Romeo & Juliet and Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

Jimmy Smith played by Castle Pines resident Sam Hulsizer.
