RHMS students stir up some healthy dishes for the district 5k

The Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) sixth grade Rappeller team recently completed the “Chefs in Schools” program under the guidance of sixth grade language arts and social studies teacher, Stacy Winsor. The kids were tasked with designing a menu and creating food for the district 5k race this spring.

The post-race nutrition guidelines stipulated that the food items had to be low salt, high protein, low-carb, and include refueling properties. In addition, they had to find the total nutritional value, and market and advertise their items.

The kids teamed up with Chef Joe Hsu from Simm’s Steak House and chose a Latin American theme, which included baked turkey empanadas, lettuce wrapped fajitas, and two kinds of smoothies. The kids worked in the kitchen at RHMS and prepared the food. They also made decorations for their booth, which included trivia posters, sandwich boards with facts about Latin America on them, signs, and banners.

The kids had a fantastic time promoting their food items at the race. Said Winsor, “It was so much fun to have the kids recognize nutritional value at such an early age! This was such a cool opportunity for them and we look forward to doing it again next year!”
