Fire mitigation is a hot topic

By Patte Smith

South Metro Fire Rescue Authority’s Life Safety Educator, Einar Jensen and Surrey Ridge HOA board member Jack LaPorte were interviewed by KDVR’s Hendrick Sybrandy about fire mitigation in Douglas County. The news story was aired on Tuesday, April 24 by Comcast Channel 13.

“We discussed the important role that homeowners have in keeping neighborhoods safe,” explained Jensen. “Every day is a good day to prepare for a disaster, and we urge residents of all areas, whether rural or urban, to plan ahead for this type of occurance.”

The top three things that homeowners can do to mitigate fire danger are:

Remove junipers within 30 feet of your home
Replace shake shingles with a fire resistant material
Plan for and practice an evacuation in case of an emergency

The June issue of The Castle Pines Connection will feature a more in-depth article about fire mitigation and the sources available to residents about this very important issue.

No South Metro Election

Because only two candidates nominated themselves for the two open board seats, there will not be a South Metro Fire Rescue board election this May. Incumbents Hank Eng and Castle Pines’ own Laura Simon will be sworn in for their second terms in May.
