Get out and pedal on

Article by Kathy Dunker

June is Colorado’s official Bike Month with the highlight being Bike to Work Day, held on Wednesday, June 27, sponsored by the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG). Employees are encouraged to leave their cars at home and get some fresh air as they cycle their way to work.

The idea behind Bike Month is to celebrate bicycling for transportation, fun and health. “The goals expressed in our regional plan for the future, Metro Vision, include reducing traffic congestion, air pollution and greenhouse gases,” said DRCOG Executive Director Jennifer Schaufele. “In addition, biking to work promotes healthy lifestyles and enhances our quality of life.”

The Bike to Work Day website offers a map of stations that will be offering refreshments the day of the event, resources for route planning, safety tips, information about group rides, t-shirt ordering, and more.

The annual event supports and promotes bicycling as a commute choice among workers who might otherwise choose to drive alone to work, in the hopes that once they try bicycling, it may become a regular part of the daily routine.

Registration for Bike to Work Day is free. To find out more about the event, visit the DRCOG website at www3.drcog.org/biketowork or to register for the event go to www.biketowork2012.org.
