The Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is celebrating its twentieth Race for the Cure event in October. The race, which will be held on Sunday, October 7, will take place at the Pepsi Center and will feature a 5K competitive run this year along with the traditional 5K celebration walk and the family one mile fun walk.

The race raises funds for breast cancer research and patient treatment as well as screening and breast health services.

“This year the Affiliate will fund 12,000 breast cancer and breast health services for individuals in Colorado through our network of grantees, all of which are organizations that share our vision of a world without breast cancer,” said Michelle Ostrander, executive director of the Affiliate.

The race is of personal significance to many of the participants and includes thousands of survivors and their family members, including Castle Pines resident Cindy Cranstone.

Cranstone, who is an advertising manager with the Castle Pines Connection and a two-year survivor of breast cancer, will participate in the race this year. She is the chairperson for the “Survivor Celebration Ceremony” which is a tribute to survivors that caps off the day’s activities.

“We’re here for the women and men of Colorado who are either uninsured or under-insured,” said Cranstone. “It is important to give back and to try and make a difference. Seventy-five percent of the money raised stays right here in the 19-county area that the Denver Affiliate serves, and it just feels good to know that you are helping people close to home.”

For more information about race times, fees, and registration, visit www.komendenver.org/race. If running/walking isn’t your style or if you are otherwise occupied on race day, you can always register to “Sleep in for the Cure.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Do you have a photo of you or your loved ones participating in any of Denver’s past 20 Races for the Cure? We’d love to print it in our October issue. Send photos and contact info by e-mail editor@castlepinesconnection.com.
