The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) recently selected Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) as a recipient of the Highly Effective School Library Program. This honor is given to schools that complete a rigorous application process and meet very specific criteria.

Amy Tempel, the teacher librarian, has been at RHMS for six years, and she works hard to promote the value of libraries with both teachers and students. Sharon Henning serves as the library media tech, and together their mission is to make the school library an essential element in preparing the students to become literate seekers of information, and to encourage a passion for reading. RHMS has been honored as a CDE Highly Effective Library, otherwise known as a Power Library, since 2007.

As a Highly Effective School Library, RHMS will be featured on the CDE website, and other schools and librarians will be directed to visit RHMS and the school website. The goal of the Power Library program is to encourage higher student achievement results. Tempel and Henning have created an environment in the RHMS library that is welcoming and accessible to students, and they collaborate closely with teachers on a daily basis.

In addition to receiving this honor for the school library, Tempel was recently named an Apple Awards finalist by the Douglas County School District and the Douglas County Educational Foundation.
