Longer LED sign hours for The Outlets at Castle Rock

By Elizabeth Wood West

The Outlets at Castle Rock (The Outlets) received unanimous approval on March 13 from the Town of Castle Rock for its request to increase the hours of operation for its LED sign from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The sign’s new hours of operation went into effect upon the town’s approval. The LED sign was originally approved by the town in November 2011, with hours of operation from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and included a condition that the LED sign would be limited to 12 hours per day. The Outlets is allowed to operate the LED sign with extended hours for holiday shopping and special events such as Thanksgiving Day Moonlight Madness, which begins at midnight.

Several residents from nearby communities expressed opposition to the increased hours of operation, citing the LED sign’s annoying glare at night and that The Outlets should adhere to what they had originally agreed to. The Outlets indicated that the sign’s extended hours of operation would increase messaging exposure to morning commuters by 24 percent. Town planning staff recommended approval of the new hours, saying the additional hours would provide a balance between impacts on surrounding areas and promoting commerce.
