The Douglas County Federation of Teachers (DCF) awarded outstanding students from throughout the district for their achievements this school year. Castle Pines-area schools were well represented with students who display academic prowess as well as good citizenship. Students were honored at a banquet in May, and a tribute written by a teacher to each student was read. Here are a few highlights about each student honored:

American Academy: Eight grader Angelina Chavez was honored by her teacher, Shannon Donohoe. Donohoe mentioned Angelina’s dedication to serving the community as well as high academic standards. “Angelina is exceptionally creative and has a determination to achieve her highest potential, no matter the obstacles that stand before her,” said Donohoe.

Buffalo Ridge Elementary: Fifth grader Gavin Geyer was honored by his teacher, Jolie Pinke. “Gavin is an upstanding citizen, student, athlete and peer,” said Jolie. She also honored him for his hard work and mentioned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do as an important part of who he is.

“It feels great to represent BRE and I hope to keep up the good work in middle school,” said Geyer.

DCS Montessori: Sixth grader Harry Pearson was honored by his teachers Karen DePretis and Michael Catalano. They honored Harry for his leadership ability and creativity. “Often he uses ‘out of the box’ thinking during his research and presentations; which inspires his fellow students and has become a favorite presenter of the class.”

Rock Canyon High School: Graduating senior Orlando Martinez was honored by science teacher Shawndra Fordham. “Orlando became passionate about science as a sophomore and then blossomed his junior year. He founded, and is president of, the Biotechnology club.” Martinez will be attending the Colorado School of Mines in the fall.

Rocky Heights Middle School: Eighth grader Allison Kerker was honored by all the teachers on the “Mountaineer Team” at RHMS. “Allison is a well-rounded young adult. She is vice president of the National Junior Honor Society, is part of the RHMS ‘Rock Stars,’ has been part of the school band since fifth grade, and has earned a 4.0 every quarter of middle school,” said the team.

“I was really honored to receive this award.  I was surprised and really happy!” said Kerker.  “I’m going to miss RHMS, the kids and the teachers.”

Timber Trail Elementary: Fifth grader Jake Porter was honored by his teacher Amber Hansen. “Jake is a great support to other students and patiently explains and helps others understand how to solve problems or comprehend text,” said Hansen.

“It was a good feeling to be honored,” said Porter. “Fifth grade has been great and I’m looking forward to middle school next year.”
