The National Association of Counties (NACo) has recognized Douglas County Sheriff David Weaver with the association’s prestigious 2012 County Courthouse Award for Innovative Governance.

Sheriff Weaver was selected as the Suburban Category winner by an independent panel of judges. He was recognized for his dedication to improving the lives of Douglas County residents, including his crucial role in the development and implementation of both the Y.E.S.S. and Text-A-Tip programs. Each of these programs has been wildly successful with regard to helping middle- and high-school-aged youth overcome the pressures, stressors, and fears of their generation.

“On behalf of the nation’s counties, I commend Sheriff Weaver for his outstanding leadership to improve social youth education programs in Douglas County,” said NACo President Lenny Eliason, Commissioner, Athens County, Ohio. “The children who took part in the programs developed by Sheriff Weaver showed higher test scores, less risky behavior, and an increase in developmental assets.”

Sheriff Weaver said he is “extremely honored to receive such a prestigious award” and credits his staff for all their hard work and dedication.

This year’s winners were honored at NACo’s 77th Annual Conference and Exposition, July 13-17, in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, PA.

Established in 2001, County Courthouse Awards recognize elected county officials who demonstrate innovative and effective leadership to improve the quality of life of their residents. One County Courthouse Award is presented each year in three categories: Rural County, Suburban County, and Urban County. Each winner receives a $5,000 college scholarship to present to a local student of his/her choice.

The County Courthouse Awards are sponsored by Siemens and presented by NACo’s Large Urban County Caucus and Rural Action Caucus. More information is available at www.naco.org.
