Cherry Hills Christian Middle School celebrated the conclusion of the first “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope” Christmas outreach event on December 16.  The month and a half long program introduced students to the reality of hunger, poverty and injustice both in the local community, the country and the world.  Raising awareness of the issue of poverty, the program helped motivate students to be pro-active in raising funds to overcome hunger.  The middle schoolers raised over $5,200 that was used to fill 280 bags of foods for students at Fairview Elementary, an inner-city school located in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Colorado.

The students not only collected monetary donations, but through personal sacrifice and fasting they learned first-hand what it feels like to be hungry.  “Our hope is that by experiencing hunger, each student will join the cause of ending world hunger,” states Donna Nelson, Middle School Spiritual Activities Coordinator.  The students also participated in a Christmas offering given to World Vision and Food for the Hungry to shed light on the unique opportunities given their generation to bring an end to global poverty.

The CHC middle schoolers spent the last day of the “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope” event engaging in interactive games and learning activities that focused on giving them a “taste of hunger.” One exhibit, a Uganda Slum Village, was sponsored by Come Let’s Dance, a non-profit organization engaged in community development work in Uganda. The interactive art show combined the photography of Emmy Award-winner Reuben Aaronson, an interactive narrative, social consciousness education and an uplifting message about the resiliency of the human spirit.

Knowledge brings about change and educating young people about the reality of poverty is a vital in making the community and the world a better place.  Through programs like “Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope” our children learn to give of themselves…the true spirit of Christmas.
