Teens coloring hair with an old familiar face

Article and photos by Kathy Dunker

What are teens doing these days to add a bright strip of color to their hair in just 15 minutes that costs under a dollar to do and lasts for several weeks? We’re not talking about salon work here, but rather the latest teen craze of Kool-Aid hair dying.

First off, this technique is more effective with lighter hair than with darker hair. And make sure you have plenty of towels on hand, as this process is messy. To get your color on, add Kool-Aid to a small bowl and be sure to use the unsweetened type. You will need at least one packet per strip of hair that you want colored. If you have longer hair or want a deeper color, two packets per strip will do the trick.

Boil some water and add only about a cup of water per packet. For even more intense tinting, you can use just a Tablespoon of water per packet which will create more of a paste than a liquid. Apply some petroleum jelly to any nearby skin that you don’t want affected. Lean back and soak the strips of hair in the Kool Aid concoction for about 10 minutes. If the paste method is used, sit up and massage it in, but don’t get it on your scalp.

Afterwards, thoroughly rinse your hair. For best results, don’t wash your hair just before or just after this process, and be careful not to get it on your clothes or the carpeting, as it can stain. After soaking, dry your hair and voila! You are officially tinted! The color will last for a few weeks and then will disappear completely as though it never even happened.
