South Metro Fire Rescue Authority (SMFRA) is accepting applications for its citizen academy. The academy will run from April 11 through May 30 on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The application deadline is March 12.

This will be the third year that SMFRA has offered the academy, and the people who have taken advantage of this amazing opportunity are giving it rave reviews.

“Citizens Academy is an amazing experience. Our fire department goes so far beyond just fire fighting; we see the science and technology of how they protect our communities, from providing emergency medical services in homes or at accident scenes, to fighting wildfires with specialized trucks, to preparing for and directing special rescue operations. And with the hands-on simulated scenarios, we get to learn the basics of how it’s done,” said Parker resident Kim Hadhazy. “After every class, I came away with amazing facts or fascinating information that I couldn’t wait to share.”

Participants will learn the basics of fire fighting and get the opportunity to don fire gear and go into the “burn building.” They also use extrication tools to simulate getting a patient out of a car involved in an accident. In addition, participants will become certified in CPR and learn about fire investigations.

The academy is open to anyone 18 years or older who lives or works in the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority: serving Castle Pines, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Foxfield, Greenwood Village, Lone Tree, Louviers, Parker and portions of unincorporated Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

An application can be downloaded at www.southmetro.org or call 720-989-2207 for more information.
