Students from Rock Canyon High School (RCHS), took first in state at the Colorado Bar Association State Mock Trial Tournament held at the Boulder County Justice Center. RCHS won in the championship round against William Jackson Palmer High School, of Colorado Springs, on Saturday, March 10.

Twenty-four teams traveled from across the state to the annual state competition in Boulder. Each team studied the same fictitious criminal murder case, where there was no body or weapon found, and the characters in the case each had “Jersey Shore” nicknames. In every round, students had to be ready to perform either the prosecution or defense side of the case and were scored by real attorneys and judges.

These students had been preparing for the tournament since September. This year, more than 100 teams from around the state competed in the program. RCHS will advance to the National Mock Trial Championship, May 3 – 6 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, they will argue a new case and will compete with more than 1,000 students from the United States, U.S. territories and South Korea.
