A wacky way to have fun!

By Patte Smith

Dig out that old dusty bike or shine up your awesome state-of-the-art bicycle, gather the family together, and join in the fun at the 3rd annual WackyW bike ride on Sunday, September 8. This one-day cycling event held at Rocky Heights Middle School is not only a fun fitness ride, but it benefits the Douglas County Educational Foundation (DCEF). Participants will choose which Douglas County school they want to support and a portion of their registration fee will go to that school. There is a general fund too that riders who are not affiliated with a school can choose.

There are four different distance rides that offer all levels of cyclists a chance to race at their pace. The six-mile race is a great ride for kids of all ages on the local trail systems, while the 45-mile race features hills, flats, and beautiful terrain running throughout Douglas County. Riders can enjoy scenic views while riding a 62-mile stretch along Highway 105. For cyclists with long-distance goals, there is a 100-mile ride along Highway 105 that includes Tomah Road and Palmer Lake.

Rocky Heights Middle School is located at 11033 Monarch Boulevard in Highlands Ranch and is the staging area for all of the WackyW races with events staring at 7 a.m. Riders in the 45, 62, or 100-mile races will receive an awesome 2013 men’s or women’s WackyW race jersey. There is a WackyW race cap or beanie for the 6-mile riders.

A fully-stocked first aid station will be at the event, as well as a sag wagon and medical, mechanical, and law enforcement support on all routes. And, riders will enjoy a yummy post-ride lunch in the food and fun zone and be given the “best goodie bag” of the season.

Sign up now for fun and fitness – it is a great way to raise funds for the schools. Visit www.wackyw.com to register and for more information. A drop down menu lets participants choose a Douglas County school to support or the general fund. A set amount from your registration automatically goes to that school’s PTO via the Douglas County Educational Foundation (DCEF).
