Beat the summer heat at Evergreen Lake

Article and photos by Lynne Marsala Basche

Escaping the heat and finding adventures close to home is sometimes challenging, but Evergreen Lake Park has something for everyone whether you want to kick back and relax or be on the go.

Created in 1927 by damming Bear Creek, Evergreen Lake offers a variety of summer recreational activities. In less than an hour drive from Castle Rock, Evergreen Lake Park is the perfect place to have fun, cool off and enjoy the scenic mountain views with these activities.

Hiking: Evergreen Lake Trail is a 1.3 mile long loop trail that follows the lake. This easy hike is a great choice for kids, and dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash.

Fishing: Evergreen Lake is stocked with rainbow trout and open year-round for fishing. Be sure to have a valid fishing license. (Fishing licenses are available at the Evergreen Safeway.)

Boating: Canoes, paddle boats, kayaks (1- and 2-person) and sailboats are available on a first-come, first-serve rental basis. Children under the age of 13 must have an adult in the boat with them at all times.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding: The Denver Paddle Company offers rentals, instruction and fitness classes at Evergreen Lake on a first-come, first-serve basis. Children under the age of 10 must board with an adult.

Picnic: Relax and enjoy a picnic or a barbecue at Evergreen Lake Park. Picnic tables are available for rent or just toss a blanket down and enjoy the scenery. Gas and electric grills are allowed.

Before the summer ends, take a ride and enjoy the majestic beauty of Evergreen Lake. For additional information, visit
