The community garage sale last month was a huge first step in cleaning out closets, basements, and overall clutter. Now it is time to redirect efforts to rid your home or office of mounds and pounds of paper!
The Allstate - Tammy Lopez Agency and The Castle Pines Connection have joined together to bring secure document shredding to Castle Pines — free of charge! The event is Saturday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Castle Pines Library parking lot, located at 7437 Village Square Drive in Castle Pines.
Bring old credit card offers/statements, tax returns, bank statements, check registers (yes, some people do still write checks), and any legal documents you no longer have use for. The secure shredding will take place on-site, and “Shred It” is a reputable, licensed and bonded company and has been for more than 20 years. According to Castle Pines resident and local certified public accountant, Wayne Ruegge, most people can can get rid of at least 90 percent of their paper within two-to-three years. “Most IRS audits will occur within three years, but the IRS can go as far back as six years,” he said. Ruegge recommends a general rule of thumb of six to seven years to retain tax documents.
Lopez warns that most people know to shred tax documents, but it is the other paperwork that contains personal information, such as insurance policies, that often go overlooked. She invites and encourages her clients and the entire Castle Pines community to join in the event. “If there is demand for it, we’d like to make this an annual event,” said Lopez.
