"Rock the Runway" ensures after prom tradition will continue

With upbeat music blasting and strobe lights flashing, Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) student models “rocked the runway” on February 10 to raise funds for the after prom party on April 13.
Guests enjoyed a silent auction, the chance to win baskets overflowing with goodies, and a delicious lunch. Models representing many sports, clubs and activities wore the latest fashions from Love Culture, JCPenney, Sports Authority, and Rack and Roll, to name a few. With the help of a dedicated team of parents, students, and faculty, models brought their “A game” with choreographed dance moves, poses, and big smiles that entertained the crowd of over 300 at the DTC Marriott. The Fashion Show concluded with each senior parent walking their son or daughter down the runway in prom formalwear. More than 90 students participated in the Fashion Show earning community service hours and the chance to shine on stage. Most importantly, they helped raise funds for their after prom event.
There are more teen traffic fatalities during prom and graduation season, due to drugs and alcohol, than any other time in the year. A proven solution to decreasing the risk is providing a safe, substance-free environment to go to after the prom. Tanya Schutte, the chair of after prom said, “It’s a growing challenge each year as our student population grows.” Nearly 700 students are expected to attend after prom this year April 13-14, 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Schutte continued, “Every year we keep the theme a secret and change it up, so the kids have surprises.” With twenty-six committees each organizing a different part of the event, there’s plenty of food, prizes and fun options for everyone.
The community is invited and encouraged to attend the after prom open house on April 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The school is transformed into a destination and the spirit, creativity, and generosity of the many volunteers comes through, all with the intention of keeping our kids safe.
