Reading Zone: Building a love of reading and fun

Patte Smith

While working at an elementary school book fair in one of the Douglas County schools last month, I stood there smiling at the kids as they shopped for books.  Running up to ask questions if we had this book or that, where they could find it, and jotting down titles on their “wish list” – it was fun seeing their excitement.  The students’ enthusiasm for reading was gratifying, as I am a lover of books, reading, and searching through the Douglas County Castle Pines neighborhood library.

I fondly remember visiting the bookmobile and swinging my 3-year-old grandson up those tall steps to this library on wheels.  He loved it and this was the start of many years for both of us being part of the Douglas County Libraries summer reading program.  Of course, I did all the reading at that time for him, but since then it has been summers learning to read, reading together, and eventually him reading on his own.

Another summer is coming and once again the DC Libraries summer reading program will have a kick-off party on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at all DCL locations.  This year’s theme is “Reading Zone” to tie into the building of new libraries in the county.   The reading program will run through July 25, complete with lots of fun library events – details are still in the works so keep checking the website at www.douglascountylibraries.org.

I hope you have as many memorable hours as I did reading, laughing, and creating off-the-wall stories from picture books with my kids and grandkids.  Be sure to sign up for this fun and family-friendly reading experience.  As children’s book author Maurice Sendak, author of “Where the Wild Things Are” stated, “There is so much more to a book than just the reading.”
