A free key to open a hidden treasure chest of learning

By Michelle Post

The Douglas County Libraries (DCL) website has a chest full of treasures in its online learning page (www.dcl.org/research/online-learning/) within the “Research” tab of its website.  One of those treasures is a learning platform that helps anyone learn business, software, technology and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals – Lynda.com.  This website provides 5,570 training courses on hundreds of topics, including but not limited to audio, animation, branding, business, design, information technology, marketing, social media, video and web design.

Lynda.com
has helped students, leaders, professionals and anyone in any role for 20 years to learn the skills needed to achieve full potential.  Lynda.com’s courses integrate multiple learning styles to ensure a learner’s success.  Each course uses videos, transcripts, hands-on exercises and is taught by an industry expert in bite-size learning.

A course can be accessed from any device with internet access (i.e., smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, TV).  The best part is that all the courses are free with a DCL card.  If an individual was to sign up directly without the DCL card, subscriptions start at a minimum $29.99 a month.

A DCL card provides lifetime access to endless hours of learning on Lynda.com, and the learning does not have to take place all at once.  It is easy to begin a course and come back to as often as desired.  Lynda.com also offers learning paths and some certifications.  When completing a Lynda.com course, it is a great idea to add it to your LinkedIn profile as independent course work.

The steps are simple:  1) apply for your temporary DCL card from the DCL website if you do not already have one; 2) receive your DCL card number and PIN; 3) log into Lynda.com from the DCL website … and let the learning begin.
