DCS Montessori students celebrate National History Day

Some of the DCSM National History Day projects included Zoe Huene’s documentary on American track and field athlete and four-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1936 games, James Cleveland ”Jesse” Owens and Drew Gassman’s exhibit on primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist and UN Messenger of Peace, Dame Jane Morris Goodall DBE (formerly Baroness Jane van Lawick-Goodall).

DCS Montessori (DCSM) middle school students participated in National History Day (NHD), which is so much more than a single day.  NHD provides year-long academic programs that engage more than half a million middle and high school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest.

As part of the NHD program, which began in 1974, there is an academic competition focusing on history for students in grades six through 12.  The international competition is geared toward students learning about different historical figures or events tied to a theme, while also working on their research and presentation skills.  This year’s theme was “Taking a Stand in History.”

This is the first year DCSM students participated, and projects included topics on Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe, Harold Clayton Lloyd, Sr., and James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens.  Students plan to present their research at regionals at the University of Denver and maybe even the University of Maryland!
