We have all heard about Rocky Heights Middle School’s (RHMS) achievements – from the wonderful theater program to the talented debate team – but recently, RHMS gained another achievement.  Seven eighth-grade girls were selected to represent RHMS at the National Women in Sports luncheon (see related story Rock Canyon student athletes honored in annual ceremony).  These students were chosen for their athleticism, school behavior, and because they are good role models at RHMS.

At the luncheon, which was held January 13  at Chaparral High School in Parker, students ate together, watched presentations, socialized and had fun.  The RHMS participants included Emily Glynn (cross country), Audrey Burt (volleyball, basketball, track), Carley Watterson (volleyball, basketball), Gabby Clutter (cross country, basketball), Eryn Collins (volleyball), Karlie Wight (volleyball) and Olivia Gibson (cross country and basketball).  All of the girls enjoyed the luncheon and felt honored to be selected.

“The luncheon is a great way to motivate girls and women who play sports to strive for and achieve greatness,” said Glynn.  Glynn also said the luncheon inspired her and gave her “great motivation.”  She was truly touched by this experience and said, “A lot of times boys and men tend to be more recognized in sports than women, and I think the luncheon is a great way to show that women can do great and play sports.”

Audrey Burt said, “It was kind of interesting to hear that we are some of the top athletes.  This is the group of the girls who are going to make a difference in sports.”  She was excited to be surrounded by high school students who shared the same love of sports.  “I felt really grown up,” Burt claimed.

Of course, these girls aren’t just talented athletes.  They are fun-loving middle school girls with a passion for sports.  These leaders had fun while inspiring others and leading their teammates.

“The luncheon was super neat because it just showed how many girls and women excelled in their behavior or performance during the sport season,” said Eryn Collins.

The National Girls & Women in Sports luncheon was a wonderful opportunity for RHMS students and was another accomplishment added to the school’s impressive achievement list.  Students love RHMS and love to get involved.  George Washington Carver once said, “There is no shortcut to achievement.  Life requires thorough preparation.”  Clearly, these girls are examples of hard work and achievement.
