Senior citizens day is August 21!

National Senior Citizens Day recognizes positive contributions senior citizens make in communities across the U.S. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health and economic issues that affect senior citizens.

Former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Senior Citizens Day in 1988. It is always celebrated on August 21, which is a Monday this year. While the holiday has not caught on by the greeting card companies, we can sure promote it and make sure families honor seniors on that day. Letting them know with gentle reminders is okay too, so long as you get your day.

Reagan said, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude by making sure our communities are places they can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
