Chalk It Up 4 Charity

Budding artists gathered at Elk Ridge Park as part of Party in the Park in August to take part in Chalk It Up 4 Charity, a community sidewalk art contest where 100 percent of the proceeds go to a local nonprofit and the winner gets to decide which one – stay tuned until next month to find out which charity our winner will select.
For the second year in a row, The Castle Pines Connection hosted Chalk It Up 4 Charity, an art contest where youth in the community gathered at Party in the Park (see related postings, Party in the Pines – Vino in the Village and Party in the Park) to make creations with sidewalk chalk. This year’s theme of “What I enjoyed this summer in Castle Pines” brought a whole new level of creativity.
Judges previewed landscapes, outdoor activities, animals and fun shapes, but a colorful slice of watermelon with three dimensional seeds caught the judges’ eyes and took the grand prize – the opportunity to select the local nonprofit that will receive ALL of the proceeds of the event.
Congratulations to 9-year-old Nathan Fields for winning first place. Once Nathan selects the charity of his choice, The Connection will do a follow-up story with details about the donation. In the meantime, Nathan will enjoy a pizza and bowling party with three of his friends at Celebrity Lanes, along with free passes to Castle Rock Zip Line Tours, a cake from The Bundt Shoppe and a Smoothie King gift card.
Our second and third place winners will also receive pizza bowling parties and mini bundt cakes. They were Logan Dietrich, who created an outdoor scene of a cyclist on a bike path and Joseph Hanna, whose creative perspective of a river through a cellphone lens impressed the judges. There were so many other really great drawings this year that we have selected 10 honorable mentions, all of whom will receive mini bundt cakes: Jacqueline Hanna, Abby Losinger, Riley Gehrke, Vedanth Satish, Brynn Reed, Cole Whittingham, Boone Thompson, Mollie Fagan, Hanna Cadwell and Kelsey Hansen.
