Second graders target families for adoption

Aven A. and Kate H. sold vanilla steamers with the support of big brother Matt H. to earn money for their adopted family’s gifts. Buffalo Ridge Elementary (BRE) second graders took a field trip in December. It was not your typical field trip; the students went to Target to shop for the families their classes adopted for Christmas.

The kids earned money by doing chores and selling lemonade and coffee on the corner. They decided what their adopted families needed or wanted and priced items out online. It all came together with a trip to Target to shop for the goods.

Chaperone Michele Hardin said, “I feel so lucky that I was chosen to chaperone this field trip to Target. The group of girls I was responsible for had to shop for the mom of the family. It was heartwarming to see the care they each took in choosing items that would brighten someone else’s holiday.”

One of Target’s cashiers was holding back tears as she learned about what the kids were doing. Another chaperone, Minda Carmann reflected, “Loved, loved, loved hanging out with these boys! They were in the Christmas spirit and never asked one time for something for themselves! They had budgeted and knew exactly what they wanted to get the girl the class selected…yes, a girl! Four eight-year-old boys bought for a 12-year-old girl, and they couldn’t have been more excited about it!”
