Senior Law and Safety Summit encourages proactive citizens

By Lynn Zahorik

The beautiful Charles Schwab conference center in Lone Tree was host to the second annual Senior Law and Safety Summit on September 15. Presented by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office the event was designed to help older people and those who care for them be proactive in protecting themselves against those who seek to take advantage of them. There were a variety of informative workshops including legal protections, senior safety, Medicaid, fraud prevention, estate planning, advance directives, reverse mortgages and innovations in aging.

Participants had the opportunity through the Ask-A-Lawyer program to meet individually with a lawyer about personal legal issues and to visit with many different senior services professionals in the vendor lobby. Approximately 230 people enjoyed this top notch educational seminar. Each attendee received a complimentary copy of the Colorado Senior Law Handbook which is a valuable legal information and reference guide for aging adults. Event organizer and Director of Consumer Protection Barbara Martin-Worley shared, “I was very heartened by the public’s interest and by the passion of our participating vendors, attorneys, speakers and community volunteers who collectively “get” that knowledge is indeed power. Many in attendance expressed appreciation for having a non-biased educational opportunity taught by highly experienced educators.” To learn more about consumer fraud protection and upcoming 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office events, visit www.da18.org.
