With the cold weather, the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority is encouraging residents and businesses to take action to prevent frozen pipes.

“We have been on a great number of water shut off calls in the last week as temperatures have gone below freezing,” said Fire Marshal Rob Geislinger. “Preventing frozen pipes will save businesses and homeowners from costly property damage.”

Here are some things you can do to prevent fire sprinkler system pipes from freezing.

  • Make sure your fire sprinkler lines are checked regularly by a contractor to make sure the valves and monitoring system are working properly.

  • Do not turn heat off in vacant buildings. Keep the temperature around 40 degrees or warmer. If you drain the sprinkler pipes they will not provide fire protection.

  • If you have an antifreeze system, have a contractor check that you have the right amount in your pipes to prevent freezing.
Tips you can do to keep your plumbing pipes from freezing.
    • Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes under sinks and appliances especially near exterior walls.

    • If you are going away do not set the thermostat lower that 55 degrees and have a neighbor check to make sure the house is warm enough and that pipes haven’t frozen.

    • On cold nights let a trickle of hot and cold water drip from a faucet on an outside wall.

    • Insulate pipes especially exposed pipes that are more susceptible to freezing.
