One tryout changed everything

Rock Canyon High School senior Lauren Scott is headed to Mars Hill University in North Carolina, becoming the school’s first female athlete to earn a college scholarship in the emerging sport of women’s flag football.
Castle Valley neighbor Lauren Scott has been an athlete for as long as she can remember. But it was not until her sophomore year in high school that she discovered the sport that changed everything. Lauren is making history as the first female athlete from Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) to earn a college scholarship in girls flag football.
Lauren has committed to Mars Hill University, near Asheville, North Carolina, where she plans to major in nursing. The career path is especially meaningful. Her mother, LeaAnn Rudduck-Blanckaert, is a nurse and has been a source of inspiration. “I really look up to my mom; she has always been an amazing role model throughout my whole life,” Lauren said. “She’s always been my number one supporter.”
Lauren grew up playing soccer and volleyball, but when she tried out for the RCHS volleyball team as a sophomore, she did not make the cut. She learned that girls flag football tryouts were happening a few days later and decided to take a chance.
“I’m forever grateful to Coach Nick Mahan. He got me into flag football,” Lauren said. She began as a wide receiver before transitioning to defense. As Lauren’s skills developed, she joined Lace Up Junior, a girls flag football club, where she trains under owner and Coach Mario Lopez, who was voted Denver Broncos flag football coach of the year in 2023 with his success at Arvada West High School.
As her interest in the sport grew, Lauren began following college girls flag football programs on Instagram. After visiting Mars Hill in the fall, she received a scholarship offer. The Christian, Division II university in North Carolina, which will kick off its inaugural flag football season this spring, felt like the right fit for Lauren.
Lauren said her mom is excited that she found a sport she truly loves. LeaAnn understands what it takes to be a student-athlete, having played Division I tennis at Colorado State University.
Lauren’s father Jonathan Scott, who passed away unexpectedly in 2022, was also an athlete, completing multiple Ironman triathlons. Lauren’s stepfather, Jason Blanckaert, has been in her life since 2019 and has been a constant source of support. Lauren’s older sister, Lindsey, is a junior at Oregon State University.
Outside of sports, Lauren works at Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply in Castle Rock and attends church every Sunday. In her spare time, she spends time with friends, family and her boyfriend and also likes to read and play guitar.
