Scam calls on the rise
There has been a significant increase in scam calls involving individuals impersonating members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO).
In one of the most common scams, callers claim to be deputies or sergeants with DCSO. They often tell the person they are calling that they missed jury duty and now have a warrant for their arrest. The caller then demands immediate payment over the phone to resolve the issue. The names being used may or may not match anyone at DCSO, and the callers are providing five-digit badge numbers, which do not belong to DCSO personnel.
DCSO will never call you to demand money, collect fines or resolve warrants over the phone. If you receive one of these calls, do not send money or engage, simply hang up. When in doubt, call DCSO dispatch at 303-660-7500.
DCSO is also seeing an increase in scams targeting families of individuals currently in custody at the Douglas County Detentions Facility. In these cases, scammers search the public inmate registry and contact a family member claiming they can help post bond. Once the family member agrees, the scammer requests payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.
A detention facility will never request payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers. Detention staff will also never call you to begin the bonding process.
If you have a loved one in custody and need to confirm bond information, contact detention staff directly at 303-660-7550 before making any payment, or visit dcsheriff.net/inmate-bonding.
