A commitment that is contagious

By Tricia Wackerly

It was during a women’s retreat in 2005 that Castle Pines resident Tammy Abramovitz was introduced to Warren Village (WV). The Denver non-profit helps low-income, previously homeless single parent families move from public assistance to personal and economic self-sufficiency. They accomplish this through subsidized housing, on-site nationally accredited child care, intensive case management, educational guidance, and career development.

Inspired by its mission, Abramovitz began volunteering in the child care department at WV. Abramovitz’s continued commitment eventually led her to the position of chairman of the board of trustees in 2010.

As Abramovitz’s involvement with WV grew, so did that of the Castle Pines community. “I couldn’t be more proud of the commitment the Castle Pines community has given to support Warren Village. I’ve seen everything from Brownie Troops, Girl Scout Troops, neighbors, and families doing whatever they can – from feeding 25 families on a Warren Village Family Night to executing a diaper drive.”

Warren Village has an annual operating budget of $4 million, half of which has to be fundraised annually, so every dollar counts, explained Abramovitz.

Seven years in, Abramovitz’s passion and commitment to the WV mission remains. “I think single parenting is hands down the hardest job on the planet. You can count yourself lucky if you are a single parent and have means, but to be economically disadvantaged and a single parent is such an incredible challenge. Our humanity requires us to see that this issue receives the time and resources it deserves. Warren Village is in the business of changing lives and saving lives, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” boasts Abramovitz.

Abramovitz, known for her infectious smile and generous spirit, throws a “Skate and Donate” for her birthday every year. Friends, neighbors and families from WV are invited. Instead of gifts, Abramovitz asks for donations for Warren Village.

The 2012 Annual Skate & Donate party will take place on March 12 at Skate City in Littleton and everyone is welcome.
