A swimmer on her way to the delivery room

The Barclay Family, Devon, her father Mike, her mother Kim, brother Brady, and their dog Tai enjoy an autumn day.
Devon Barclay, 19, is studying to be a labor and delivery nurse at the University of Wyoming. Devon and brother, Brady (17), have both lived in the Turquoise Terrace neighborhood their entire lives.
Devon grew up swimming, joining the Castle Pines Storm team when she was 6 years old, and staying with the team until she was 14, while attending American Academy and Rocky Heights Middle School. She was on Rock Canyon High School’s varsity swim and dive team for all four years. One team was not enough for the lifelong swimmer though, and Devon stayed with the Highlands Ranch Aquatics team from ages 7 to 17.
“Anything that had to do with water I absolutely loved,” stated Devon. “Chatfield Reservoir was one of my favorite places to swim, boat, raft and paddle board.” Devon shared that her favorite memories of growing up in Castle Pines are the friends and the summers on the Storm swim team.
Out of the water, Devon was mainly interested in science in school, leading her down the path to nursing school. “I wanted to work in healthcare because I always loved science and was fascinated with the human body. Once I realized nurses cover so many specialties, I knew that was for me,” she stated. The sophomore intends to graduate in 2028.
Even as a young adult and student, Devon said she is aware of the comfort and care new mothers, and all patients, deserve, as well as the necessary work of factoring in a mother’s individual desires and plans for recovery. Though she stated that nursing appeals to her because of how many different kinds of people she could help, Devon said, “Helping bring life into the world seems like such a rewarding task that I would love to be a part of. I think I would be helpful and empathetic, as a mother is going through a scary life change.”
Devon understands the stress and demands of the healthcare world and often comes back to Castle Pines to recharge around her family, go for a hike, see friends, and if the weather permits, perhaps take a dip in the pool.

Devon Barclay is currently in nursing school at the University of Wyoming.

As a child growing up in Castle Pines, Devon was a member of the Castle Pines Storm swim team and remained an avid swimmer for most of her life.
