Castle Rock plans to widen Fifth Street

The Town of Castle Rock is planning to widen Fifth Street in downtown Castle Rock. The project will be constructed in two separate, independent phases beginning this month.

The Town of Castle Rock (Town) is planning to widen Fifth Street in downtown Castle Rock, a major arterial road connecting local and regional travel between the eastern areas of downtown and I-25. With approvals by Town Council, construction will begin this month and be competed in 2029.

Roadway and pedestrian improvements for Fifth Street have been identified within the Town’s Transportation Master Plan which includes maintaining adequate capacity, enhancing pedestrian experiences, improving safety and ensuring efficient road network connections for future traffic growth. The improvements will include additional vehicle travel lanes, intersection improvements, bike lanes and sidewalks on Fifth Street from Woodlands Boulevard to Ridge Road.

In order to leverage the $3.5 million in federal grant money and meet budget constraints, the project will be constructed in two separate, independent phases:

Phase 1 is expected to begin in September and run through 2026 and includes:

  • Widening the roadway to four through lanes (two in each direction) between Valley Drive and Ridge Road.
  • Constructing sidewalk to connect Gilbert Street and Ridge Road.
  • Installing a traffic signal at the Valley Drive intersection.

Phase 2 is scheduled for 2028-2029 and includes:

  • A roundabout at the Woodlands Boulevard intersection.
  • Widening the roadway to include additional lanes and on-street bike lanes between Woodlands Boulevard and Valley Drive.
  • Adding a second sidewalk connection between Gilbert Street and Valley Drive.
  • Storm drainage improvements between Gilbert Street and Woodlands Boulevard.
  • Installing a median between Rock Street and Valley Drive.

“When complete, the project will make it easier and safer to travel between eastern areas of Town and I-25,” stated Andrew Focht, project manager for the Town. “We appreciate the community’s patience while drivers may experience some short delays and changing traffic patterns through the duration of the project.”
