Singing to lift spirits

5280+ Senior Chorales co-founder and accompanist Cindy Runkel with choir member and Legacy Village resident Jerry Dilley after the “Good Tidings” performance last month.

On December 6, Legacy Village of Castle Pines residents enjoyed the hour-long concert called “Good Tidings” performed by the 5280+ Senior Chorales. The choir sang seasonal songs and ended with cheerful favorite “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Among the performers was Legacy Village resident Jerry Dilley doing what he loves most, singing.

Jerry’s love of music began back in 1971 when his wife, Alexandra, encouraged him to take voice lessons when they lived in Thornton, Illinois. He has been singing ever since. “There’s nothing like singing. It lifts your spirits,” Jerry said.

Jerry and Alexandra became part of 5280+ Senior Chorales when it first started 11 years ago. Living in Highlands Ranch at the time, the couple spotted an ad for a daytime, no-audition choir for adults ages 50-80+ and decided to join. They enjoyed many performances together throughout the years.

Jerry lost Alexandra a year ago, and the choir has been a steady source of comfort and companionship for him. “The group helped me through a difficult time,” Jerry said. “They even looked after Alexandra in her last seasons with us.”

For Jerry, singing continues to be a way to stay connected, stay active, and lift spirits—his own and those who hear him sing.

The 5280+ Senior Chorales performed fall and holiday favorites such as “Breath of Heaven” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Cindy Runkel (pianist), Jerry Dilley (front row seated) and Christine Guarente (conductor).
