Furry Scurry planned for Saturday, May 2

by Terri Wiebold

Fetch your sneakers and your furry friends and join in the 2009 Furry Scurry. In its sixteenth year, this annual event helps the Denver Dumb Friends League (DDFL) raise money through donations and pledges to care for thousands of homeless animals. The two-mile fun walk/run will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 2, at Washington Park in Denver. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

According to the DDFL, more than 25,000 cats and dogs, as well as rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils and other small pets, are brought to the shelters each year. An average of $20,876 is spent daily to care for them. The fundraising goal for 2009 is $850,000, and one hundred percent of the pledges raised from the Furry Scurry will support these efforts.

During the event, enjoy free refreshments, activities and pet-friendly merchandise at the “Flea-free” Market. Fun activities and prizes await, including the Pet/Person Look-alike Contest at 10:15 a.m. and Best Pet Trick Contest at 11:00 a.m. Dog microchip ID implants will also be available.

The cost to register is $50 per person (not per pet). For more information, or to register, visit www.ddfl.org or call 303-751-5772.

Briar Cliff resident and pet lover Shirley Beer-Powell had this to say about the event, which she has attended many times over the years: “It’s very well run, amazing to see that many dogs in one place with few incidents, and super fun!”
