Annual hydrant flushing underway

The Castle Pines North Metro District (CPNMD) began its annual fire hydrant flushing program to maintain water quality and ensure the reliability of the water distribution system last month. This routine maintenance is expected to continue until late June or early July.

Hydrant flushing plays a vital role in keeping the water system clean and functioning properly. The process removes naturally occurring minerals, like iron, that build up inside water mains over time.

“While it may seem like water is being wasted, flushing is a necessary part of maintaining a safe and reliable drinking water system,” said Nathan Travis, CPNMD manager. “This is done in conjunction with fire hydrant maintenance, ensuring that our hydrants are in working order in case of emergencies.”

Residents may notice temporary changes in water pressure or slight water discoloration during flushing. These effects are not harmful and can usually be resolved by running cold water taps for a few minutes. The water is safe to drink. If issues persist, residents are encouraged to follow the instructions at cpnmd.org/system-flushing-notice.

To minimize inconvenience, crews are flushing hydrants during normal business hours and notifying neighborhoods the day prior to work starting via text notification.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to keep your water clean, safe, and reliable,” said Travis.
